Salamander - Squalls

We've been warned about squalls and what to expect. Today had been our first experience of them.

We can see from behind a gathering mass of darker cloud and the rain precipitating beneath. So you know they are coming and can time their arrival pretty accurately.

The wind increases by around 7 - 10 knots and the rain starts. We have to close the hatchway quickly to avoid too much rain falling into the cabin. We also mop the steps to keep them clear of the potential of slipping while moving about.

What we also witnessed was a change in wind direction by about 10 degrees. I thought this change would come back after the squall but it didn't. The next squall came through and the same thing happened again! By the third time we had no chance of keeping anywhere near our original course so it was time to wake the skipper and decide what action to take!

The decision was to change our sail plan. See the next blog to see what this involved.
