World ARC 2019-20 Start from Santa Cruz, Galapagos Islands

Under sunny skies this afternoon, the World ARC fleet of 2019-20 began Leg 4 of their rally around the world. The next journey, the longest on the World ARC route, will see the fleet of 25 yachts carrying 99 crew between them, cover a distance of just under 3,000 NM from Santa Cruz in the Galapagos to Hiva Oa in the Marquesas. This journey is likely to take the fastest boats just over 14 days while the remainder will spend three weeks at sea.

With winds around 10-12 knots and calm seas, the conditions were excellent at the start line in Academy Bay and many of the fleet set sail under a variety of colourful downwind sails.

A cautious start saw a diverse selection of boats crossing the line, first was one of the family boats, Charm, an Outremer 55, very closely followed by Tumi, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 469. Hot on their heels was one of the Lagoons, Cabana, just in front of Makara of Exe an X-Yacht 55 and then the Hanse 575, Seaside.

As one of the most eagerly anticipated stopovers, all participants have thoroughly enjoyed their two weeks in the Galapagos Islands. Having had the opportunity to visit three different islands and experience many different tours, dive excursions and cruises these extraordinary islands have certainly lived up to their expectations and for many, exceeded them. This very special place will remain in everyone’s memories for many years to come.

All boats carry a tracking device enabling each one to be followed as they make their way towards the Marquesas. To follow their progress please click here

We all wish the fleet fair winds for their journey, we will be watching.
