Diamonds Are Forever - Churning Stomachs, Churning Seas

Song of the Day: Meatloaf – Bat out of Hell

So on Tuesday at 0330 we left our berth in Las Palmas to restart the ARC 2012, Coyote 2 closely followed behind us and EH01 a few hours behind.

After searching around we eventually found our approximate start and turned the engine off and got going, we flew down the island making it to the southern end by about lunchtime. It was a beautiful day as we sat wondering when it would sink in that we had actually left!

We saw our first pod of dolphins that followed and played with us for a little while as Penny took the helm. Jackie took to mother duty very well and made sure we were fed and watered and happy.

As the sun was just about to set the wind started to pick up so we decided to put our third reef in to make the sail smaller. Unfortunately this led to a rip in the main, we decided to make our way up towards Tenerife to try to fix it. After 5 hours of upwind sailing in gusts of 40 knots and a very uncomfortable ride (especially for some of the girls) we thought as it was a downwind race our main wouldn’t make too much of a difference and started heading back towards St. Lucia.

As we were sailing through the night we were thinking about the cruising class and hope that everyone got through last night ok!

Today (Wednesday) has been a lot calmer as we’ve noticed the wind decreasing more and the swell had calmed down from last night. We were treated to Jackie’s homemade egg fried rice with vegetables for lunch as well as getting the boat back to normal after last night!

Total Nautical Miles: 165

Toilet Rolls remaining: 47
