Suffisant - ARC 2020, Preparations and other things

(German below)

Many things have to be clarified and prepared for a regatta with the ARC and a following sailing around the world.

In my reports I would like to describe my preparations, about the yacht equipment, about me, about my crew.

For 2020, I have set myself the goal of participating in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) once again. Already in 2005, 2010, 2011 and 2012 I took part in this event, partly as crew member, partly as owner and skipper. The regatta, organized by the World Cruising Club, has a friendly character, was always carefully and super organized and its really impressed me. With my own sailing yacht VIA CON ME at that time, I had once finished 83rd and once 87th. Not bad for a short 12m yacht... Now in 2020 I start with a smaller yacht (only 10 m), with my little SUFFISANT. But first it will be necessary to bring everything together. The preparations need time. The whole charts material must be purchased and the clearings with the boat for the various countries must be studied etc.

At the moment it looks at my home, at my boat, in the Marina Seca like on the battle field…

But today we beginn with myself:

Born in 1956, I first came into touch with sailing in 1980. At that time I was young and unspoilt, and I hardly ever got involved with wind directions, lee or luv, squalls, etc.  I didn't stand much at the helm at that time but spent more time in the galley...

Married early, divorced soon, I wanted to discover the world. So I made my way from Europe to USA and South America, later Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Hawaii, Tahiti, Bora Bora etc. mostly with a rucksack or a Land Rover. The money I earned at that time was carefully put aside to afford those trips.

At the age of 48 - but not wiser - I wanted to re-define myself (according to my friends this should happen more than once). So I quit a job again and drove to Breege, Rügen, Germany. Three months I spent there with sailing courses, sailing cruises, sailing exams.

Not knowing if  whether the " ocean " would grab me and if I might even be suitable for long distances, I decided in 2005 to cross the Atlantic with the annual ARC Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (this was the 1st time). I was enthusiastic about the long distances. To watch the celestial sky without any further light influences, to have the sea with a buzzing wind around you, to take up the challenge of bringing good dishes to the table, the organization, the whole atmosphere...

It had caught me!
