Hatha Maris - Day 7 - 2/12/2019

Hatha Maris - day 7 - 2/12/2019

Who we are: Karin Nebel -

Since my childhood I love water, whether it’s a river, a lake or the sea. I was born in Zurich, Switzerland, which lays directly at the lake of Zurich and the river Limmat is running through. I grew up close by the river, my grandma taught me swimming when I was 4 years old, so no wonder I was always one of the best when we had swimming lessons in school :o) I learned windsurfing from my dad and my older brothers, and we spent some of our holidays practicing it in Italy, on the lake of Silvaplana, Switzerland, or in Hyères, France. After my schooltime I started to study medicine and became an anesthesiologist. I moved to a small city just at the lake of Zurich. My love to the water never ended, so I learned scuba diving and finally sailing. After my Day Skipper Course with Thalita as my great instructor, she asked me if I would like to join this Atlantic Crossing as a crew member. Sure! I could arrange it with my job and here I am :) What an experience!

Corinne Wirth, First Mate
Good morning folks, Im Corinne from Switzerland, Yachtmaster Ocean Commercial, and on this boat Im mainly responsible to observe and coach. Also finding solutions to all kind of issues is part of my beloved job.
Our lovely girls from Sweden are all new to yachting and doing great. After a rather rough start they have grown sea legs and developed sailing skills.
Tomorrow, Dezember 5th, we might have sailed half of the distance. Let’s think about a “Halfway Party” ! Im looking forward to this and say good bye, hearing from us soon.

Yulia Shevelva -

Happy young woman 34 y.o., information systems solution designer from Israel, addicted by the sea thanks to my mom who grew up on the Black sea. Five years ago I was working for some project and was invited by one of our directors to spend a team fun day on his yacht in Herzlia, Israel. He offered me a book about a young girl from the US who decided to go solo around the world instead of going to the college. It was very inspiring for me. Since then I am sailing and racing.
In Israel, we have a nicely developed accessible system of sea scouts for kids and yacht clubs-schools for adults, where you can first learn for the boat license and then rent a yacht on an hour basis in different locations across the country (from picturesque ancient Jaffa to modern Herzlia, Haifa and Ashkelon). But in the same time there’s only one person for the whole country who’s certified as an RYA instructor. So, there is good opportunity to make the RYA more present in Israel and to involve professional racers in the high level sailing education that also includes a merge of navigational and IT skills. I believe I can do that and WE can do that together, so our kids can dream big and have facilities to become next Ocean Racers and Vandeglobe soloists.

Sophia Rosenqvist -

Together with my friend Ebba, I am representing Sweden onboard. I graduated from Swedish high school in June and wanted to pursue my dream about sailing across the Atlantic ocean. I have been sailing and driving motorboats for as long as I can remember. Other then sailing I enjoy skiing, being out in nature and swimming. In first grade of elementary school, Ebba and I decided that we were to do the crossing together. Many years of friendship later, I sent a text asking if she was serious about the crossing, which she apparently was. So here we are. Every day we are being challenged and are learning new things thanks to our coach Corinne. Life onboard is tough, yet fun.

Ebba Koskull -

As 19, and two months younger than Sophia, I am the youngest onboard Hatha Maris. As a child a was racing dinghies for several years which has benefited me during this crossing. This crossing has been a dream of my dad as well as one of mine therefore I just had to do it before him. I have grown up in Stockholm, Sweden and sailing has been a natural part of my life since birth. After I received the text from Sophia asking to cross the Atlantic together, we both quit our jobs to live out our dream. A side from sailing, I love to sing, eat and workout. So far this has been an adventure for life.

Tara Law -

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, I discovered my love of sailing early on during my youth through summer sailing and racing at Cathedral Bluffs Yacht Club on Lake Ontario.
Later in adult life, I’ve rediscovered my passion for sailing and decided to pursue RYA Day Skippers and Coastal Navigation courses in the Caribbean as well as participate in RORC Caribbean 600 this past February.
I’m fortunate to be granted a sabbatical from my career as an Environmental Project Manager to further pursue my sailing dreams.
I feel excited and privileged to join Second Star Sailing - Women at the Helm - with Thalita, Corinne and my fantastic crew mates for this dream opportunity to broaden my experience as a sailor, face challenges together as a team and build new friendships during this Atlantic crossing.
This unforgettable experience is dedicated to the late Roma Reynolds through whom this opportunity was made possible.
It’s one step closer to my ultimate dream of circumnavigating the world (and also possibly catching a fish along the way ;-) )

Mirjam Hediger -

I’m as well from Switzerland and therefore the forth Swiss Lady. The sea and sailing vessels fascinated me since childhood, even I had not really contact with the sea or sailing vessels. Therefore I’m sailing only since 7 years. Normally I prefer colder temperatures. But the offer from Thalita to sail with females only and even across the Atlantic to the Caribbean kept spinning in my mind ‘til I sind up for it. The crew members are nice and we have a good time together.

Thalita Zur Werra, Skipper -

2015 I found my big passion sailing crossing the Atlantic as a Competent Crew Student. Never went back to my old life again and never regret it (missing my beautiful swiss Alps once in awhile). The summers I spent in Bella Italia as a RYA Instructor with Second Star Sailing and the winters I cross over to the warm islands. For the first time I am skippering an Atlantic Crossing and I am privileged to have such an awesome international all female crew. Life at sea can be very different from ,normal, life and sometimes it can be challenging. The more it is important to work together as a team, be passion with each other and share the different experiences. The ladies have different sailing backgrounds and are very keen to learn new skills. The boat language is english but only one native english speaking women onboard. Beside being safe the most important factor is having as much fun as possible (and catching up to the fleet after our technical delayed start). It is an adventure for life and some new friendships will hold forever!
