Sweet Dream - Day 4 January 16,2019

A red band of light shone through the ubiquitous storm clouds on the eastern horizon. The grey lumps began there and stretched across the vastness of the lightening sky. A thick squall raced up on our starboard quarter, moving fast and bringing a gusty wind. The light sprinkling of rain that ensued made the sea feel like a piece of ironing anticipating the pressing heat of day to smooth out the residual wrinkles of darkness. It WOULD be lovely if the water flattened out some. All night long we battled against the incessant side to side rolling induced by the confused seas. It continues to astonish us how the waves are so large in proportion to the mostly frustrating light winds. Flying a “goose wing” rig with the Genoa poled out to starboard, and the main prevented out to port, we wallow along like a cygnet just learning to swim, with wings held awkwardly akimbo, occasionally getting it right, and surfing majestically, but more often being caught on the quarter by a big crested wave trailing frothy foam that sends us in a rodeo style corkscrew motion, every loose thing clanging and banging. I laugh to myself and think the expression, “ loose as a goose” has an entirely new meaning. When we are upright, though, the sailing is delightful. Opalescent colour floods the west, reflecting from the orange ball rising between thunderheads to the east. Mid morning and “FISH ON!” Lars lands us a nice fat tuna on the rod with the pink squid. We enjoy fish meals for a couple of days while living the Sweet Dream.
