Bimble - Day 17 'Bimble' log 'Nothing'

‘Nothing much to report…..here goes as nearly there’

Highlight of the day so far (which probably horrified Stephen) was a Celine Dion concert……yes she blasted out over the ocean blue whilst we sang along….Rod loves her and is a bit of a diva fan generally, so whether Dolly, Bonny or Whitney it was his go to for singing in the car…not very high brow music but he’s right up there as their fans. Lucy  in her enthusiasm and love of drama to sing along to Celine and to full effect she used a wooden spoon as her mike and strutted her stuff around the saloon whilst cooking lunch.

So back to the beginning of the day we awoke to frustrating wind speeds again and it is becoming a lesson in extreme patience as we are back to of 6 kts SOG…with just the Gennaker flying and trying to maintain a heading of 262 degrees and keep St Lucia on the nose. We have 191nm to go, tantalisingly near….but what would take us about 5 hours to drive is going to take another 30 or so hours and that is IF the wind doesn’t abate even more…..AAAaaHHHHH…..So you can see patience is not my best virtue, we said 18 days for this crossing, I really, really, really hope it is not going to be more. We want some down time and swimming before flying out on Tuesday.

It is HOT, HOT, HOT today, an intense, burning heat beyond belief so all crew are sun creamed up and tans are being topped up in various locations on deck and trampoline. The sargasso weed has put paid to any fishing but then do really we need a 10 kg fish at this stage? The weed also got caught around the prop and caused a weird shaking and vibration which could be felt in the bunks, a lot of reverse thrust and it seems to be freed now. Huge islands of the weed is going past us. It is the most gorgeous golden colour but one can’t fail to think that something is wrong jn that there is such a vast quantity and volume that is floating on the surface of the ocean….I will do a bit of research once I get the internet again.

I watched the film, ‘The Help’ overnight and finished it this morning, I must be a sucker for a weepy at the mo its my 2nd of the trip. Excellent film though, really enjoyed everything about it. I have also been listening to ‘Sapiens’ via ‘Audible’ during my watches…..as I’ve sadly now run out of  podcasts of ‘Infinite monkey cage’. I am learning lots with this book, it is a pretty interesting thesis on Homosapiens, challenging a lot of what I have been taught historically…..

Lunch was a collaboration of creativity by us ‘Bimble' women each of us coming up with what to make our of our diminishing fresh veg and supplies. So a coleslaw salad and an avocado, tomato and radish salad accompanied our FIRST pasta meal of the trip……yes we had tortellini stuffed with ricotta and spinach, parmesan cheese, pesto plus other little yummies. So all that is left now is one tomato, 2 oranges, 1 satsuma, a squash, lots of onions, lots of garlic a nub of ginger….what to do with it?…..traditionally on family sailing trips I have always made what we came to affectionately call ‘Manky curry”…..which is always different but delicious. Freyja and I told Lucy this and her face fell, I think she felt it really would be manky and taste utterly manky ….. so she is to be surprised (hopefully) by my treat tomorrow and it will be our LAST full day at sea….so Lucy will be a ‘Manky curry’ end of sail convert. I think pakoras will have to be made from the onions, we still have poppadoms, chutney etc…..so I am excited at least.

We chatted with yacht ‘Johanna’ after lunch, we spoke with Bernie on board their X-Yacht X-412 (I’m not familiar with the model but it sounds fast and exotic)….they are planning to make land fall Friday so we will definitely hook up for a drink and a chat with them in Rodney Bay.

So I am off to dangle my toes in the 28 degree C ocean…yup it is warm here. I hope to report a sighting of land tomorrow and then probably the end to our logs as we will be kicking up our heels and having a bit of a ‘Jump up’ in celebration of all that we have achieved. I really believe we will cry tomorrow and be in mixed emotions about finishing….after all I have said about wanting to get there, I am actually feeling sad it will soon be over…..BUT then new adventures on the horizon…and all the learnings which have been different for each crew member can be integrated into the everyday life.

Photos today, Sargasso weed and finishing the blue sky and completing the jigsaw puzzle.

So over and out for now.
Love to all in UK and all who may be reading this….XX
Nina and all on ‘Bimble’
