Passepartout - Passepartout Day 2: leading the division with a roast dinner.

End of the second day and Passepartout is leading Division H (the slowest one) and up with the leaders of the next two fastest sitting alongside boats 10 feet longer. We’ve had a good sail so far carrying the spinnaker most of the way hitting 13.6 knots in the acceleration zone SE of Gran Canaria. Going so close meant we entered the island’s wind shadow further on with little wind and had to work our way out for a couple of hours. We are on the north track heading for the stronger winds of a light depression WNW of the Canaries along with many of the other boats that are in racing mode.

We’ve a bit of time hand steering with the spinnaker keeping us busy: Doug & Cathy are old hands, but Jean-Louis & Hugo are getting a good lesson on how to handle a spinnaker in a strong wind. That night darkness fell very quickly making steering with the kite very tricky, so we opted for the goose winged jib which is not a lot slower, but much easier to handle and steer by.

We are settling into onboard life getting used to the broken watches and short sleeps; in a day or so we’ll have that down pat. Hugo is cooking up fabulous meal and tonight is chicken roast, made more remarkable because the gimballed mount broke today necessitating repairs.
