Adele 1 - Adele 1 log - day 8

Afternoon all

Its been an unusual two days for the crew of Adele 1, now about half way through the journey to Cape Verde we have both positive and negative experiences to report.

On the negative side the wind has taken a huge downturn and left us all but bobbing around. This change in the wind had granted us an opportunity to spend abit more time taking in our surroundings though, with flatter seas nature seems to be coming out to give us our silver lining to the no wind predicament.

First unexpected smile to be brought to my lips was when I was on watch and a tiny bird flew into the cockpit, obviously exhausted he didn't mind when I picked him up and sat quite happily in my hand making me feel every bit the Disney princess. Unsuprisingly naming the bird as he sat on the table for a few hours was in our usual unimaginative fashion and he was dubbed ‘Birdie’. Seems that travelling so far from land was too much though for wee Birdie though and he passed away a few hours later and was given a brief but heartfelt burial at sea.

A few hours later and mother nature raised her head again to remind us that being at sea is sometimes more about the journey than the destination. Visited by a super pod of dolphins as far as the eye could see had us all stood in awe at the magnitude of the gathering of these playful and impressive creatures (though truth be told a few hours later we wanted them to bugger off so we could do some fishing).

On the topic of fishing this morning heralded our first fishing success with Paul and myself each bringing in a few Skipjack tuna. Smaller than the monsters that have been hooked up and caught in our dreams and announced too oily to be a decent meal they were thrown back into the sea and we continued to wait for better fare. This could have been brought in a few hours later as I hooked into something much larger but alas! It was not to be and the fish was lost half way to the boat.

The last addition to our 48 hour game of Eye Spy is the chilled out seaturtles we have seen drifting past, not in any rush to get anywhere these relaxed creatures seem quite happy floating about looking for fish and enjoying the sunshine, I know the feeling!

In summary, despite the lack of wind this sure beats any day sat in an office!

Farewell for now folks
