Timshel - Erromango

Left Port Resolution early on Friday morning, following Lexington out so 2nd in fleet for a while. The wind came up giving all a brisk sail, we went wing and wing. Dillons Bay was a good anchorage and plenty of room for everyone. Lexington went ashore and Cap'n Bob took the lead arranging things with the local village, Unpongkor. 4 people went on a walk starting at 07.30 to see a very large tree. The rest met up at 0900 on the beach and guide David took us (this involved a dinghy ride first then a short walk and some scrambling) to see the Cave of Skulls - quite amazing to see the bones and skulls laid out. Then David wanted to take us on a tour of the village, and it seemed rude to refuse, but as we found later we should have declined and gone back to the boat to finish and get the food for the Potluck lunch. The village tour was lovely, we met the chief, Jason, and it is a beautiful place, on our return however we found everyone from the village waiting in the hall for the lunch that was billed as starting at 12.00, we had not known it was such a formal affair and had thought it would just start when everyone got back from the tours. It was just as well that we did not drawn into a tour of the other side of the river to a monument to a missionary who had died here. Afraid we missed the speeches while we rushed back to get the food and some gifts. Next problem is that nobody from the village will start eating until guests (ie us) have finished and are full, so we felt it necessary to not take too much and choose and eat quickly - but there were more latecomers. Next problem was that the 4 from the tree walk were not back - it had been billed as 2 hrs each way, in fact they got back after 4 pm; anyway this was solved by plates of food being put aside for them and the village ate. I was sorry we could not actually eat with them, but I assume they liked the food we'd brought, it was all gone. They had provided some delicious fish and a lot of other things. We went to the "Yacht Club" that David is developing, i.e. a shack decorated with flags and a Visitors book, then back to the boat to get ready for the overnight passage to Port Vila, Efate.
