Lexington - Captain Bob: food pyrimid

I am setting on the boat this morning having my coffee chocolate whipped cream concoction and all around the boat are birds feasting on fish. There are pelicans just setting on the surface picking up fish as they swim by instead of diving. There are silvery grey black birds that fly along scupping up fish without diving or landing. There are pickerel birds that land and do shallow dives. It would be interesting to see what is going on under the surface. Probably there are larger fish feeding on small fish that may be feeding on small fish. I can not remember for sure but I think there is a migration on anchovies or sardines that follow the Humbolt current. The El Niño and La Niña weather pattern effect the paths of this migration. I think on a El Niño they have to go further south to catch the fish. It is amazing how productive the oceans are. It would be interesting to see an estimate of the tonnage of biomass produced. Watching the sea turtles eat reminded me of a cow grazing on alfalfa. In areas of lots of turtles there did not seem to be any lack of "alfalfa "
Hope everyone is enjoying the unseasonably warm weather in Kentucky.
