Sablier - Leg 1 completed!

We began our journey to sail around the Delmarva Peninsula months ago. But the final day was upon us. Grant Woodside (skipper), Diane (DePew) Woodside, Susan Whalen, and Nick Steinbrecher had done a shake out cruise 3 weeks earlier. We identified what was needed (Coast Guard approved live jackets)  and optional luxuries (cup holders!). We had done everything we could think of (bounded only by time and money) to prepare the boat and ourselves. Good thing we each prepped out nails to show team spirit! (See pic). The last few items were brought aboard the boat on the eve of departure and we hoped to have a good night sleep.

On Sunday, June 19, Grant, Diane, Susan and Nick left Glebe Bay aboard the s/v Sablier at 8:57 am to start the first leg of the trip. The goal was to leave at 9 am sharp! We were 3 minutes early!  The weather was beautiful - blue skies, a smattering of clouds, low humidity, temps in the 70-80's. The only issue was not enough wind! From Glebe Bay,bye sailed out of the South River into the Chesapeake Bay. The wind was from the south at 2 to 3 knots (kn), so we motored the entire first leg. The night sky was lit up by the full moon. It truly was breathtaking.  This was the first overnight "sail" that Grant, Diane, and Nick had every done, not to mention the first time out of the Maryland for sailing. Fortunately, Susan, the experienced international sailor (Bermuda is international, right?), bumped us over the state line with no damage.

We arrived to the Hampton Roads/Norfolk/Portsmouth entrance at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay around  7 a.m. By 9 am, the boat was fueled, the dirty tank (think sewer water) was emptied, and we were in the slip! We were afloat for 24 hours!

Tonight is another Skipper's Briefing, and weather permitting, leg 2 starts and we are Atlantic Ocean Bound!
