Ximera - Leg 2, Log Day 8 – Wing and wing

Since the last post, we have had a day of mellow but fast sailing, with the wind on our beam and the gennaker flying, a day of motoring, and today we are on a run, with the gennekar goose-winged to windward and the jib to leeward.

Weather has been great, with cool, sunny days and moonlit nights, and small swells around 1 meter. We’ve been able to wash up the boat, clothing, and even our bodies. We’re feeling relaxed, refreshed and rejuvenated after the first part of the voyage, which was exhilarating (30+ knots of wind and 3+ meter seas) but quite exhausting. This fair-weather sailing is a welcome respite and having passed the halfway mark, we’re feeling optimistic about getting to Faial in one piece.

The food has been delicious. Our galley-gods Michelle and Simon have been one-upping each other each day, with creative dishes for omnivores and vegans alike (our skipper Will is vegan, and I, Jonas, flirt with vegan/vegetarianism). Yesterday we had vegetable & couscous stew, with and without chicken, as well as a vegan apple crumble, and today’s lunch menu had falafel sandwiches and a gooey fudge cake for dessert.

After days without contact with other vessels, today we spotted a sailboat, the Taboo of Saint Helier, with its sails down, and not making headway. Concerned with the fate if its crew, and the good Samaritans we are, we decided to intervene to save the forlorn sailors, who we were sure had fallen into serious peril from some mysterious misfortune.

After unsuccessfully attempting radio contact with the vessel, we radically changed our course to heroically save the day and rescue our fellow seamen and seawomen in distress. They may have seen us coming, because they raised their sails, and answered our radio call, and in so many words, kindly told us to f__ off, without even thanking us for potentially saving their lives in the middle of the Atlantic.

As the old adage goes, “no good deed goes unpunished.”
