Paw Paw - Log Day 103: Worlds Apart, Yet Similar

Faced with the continuation of the unsettled weather, we put our plans to do a dive this morning on hold. Not wanting to miss the opportunity, we decided instead to have lunch at Snack Moetua, given that it's the first time we've seen it open for business again since last Saturday when the cruise ship was here. It was definitely worth the wait and confirmed why it was frequented by so many locals. Elaine had the Shrimp in a Curried Coconut Sauce and Roy had Tuna Carpaccio - Simply Delcious!

After lunch we took a water taxi across the pass to the "Old Village" of Tiputa, a rather off the beaten track destination for most cruisers, but very interesting, nonetheless, as it gave us a wonderful perspective on how and where the locals live in their neat and tidy homes, set amongst pretty gardens, surrounded by low stone walls. The old church, although in need of some maintenance, was so unique in its simplicity, yet charming - A complete contrast to the open air churches we saw in the Marquesas Islands with their beautiful stone work and wood carvings.

Besides freshly baked baquettes, pastries and café, the French islands in the Caribbean and those of French Polynesia, although world's apart, seem so similar in this common aspect - A church at the centre of a community, regardless of how remote that community might be.
