Why Not - At last Las Palmas.......

Pleased to say we have made it to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. After what feels a lifetime of planning we are finally here and ready to do the final preparations for the crossing. I, not being the sailor was dreading the passage from Gibraltar to Gran Canaria. I was sure we were going to have some lively seas, fortunately the Gods answered my prayers and we had an extremely uneventful trip down. Richard would say a little too uneventful for his liking. Virtually no wind and he had to spend his time looking for it! I was really in my element especially as we had birds come and rest on the bimini, who were happy to spend a few hours there, two lots of whales and hundreds of dolphins who would happily spend half an hour playing at the bow.
We have brought the yacht down from Valencia and Richard and I had the help of two good friends, Paul & Jo for the first stretch of the trip down to Gibraltar. When we got to Gibraltar they flew home and we enlisted the help of two young Polish lads, who are hitchhiking around the world. I was a little dubious, but Richard assured me that they were just young lads enjoying a few years out and he was correct. I shouldn't be so weary, they were lovely lads and it was great to have a chat about their culture and ours and hear the views from people who come from a very different country to the one we know.

Richard being the keen fisherman that he is, got them into fishing and they both managed to catch a fish, one a dolphin fish and the other a tuna, both were released, due to the fact that you can only eat so much fish lol!  When we got to Las Palmas, they were very grateful and said their goodbyes, but came back to tell us that they had secured a lift on another yacht a catamaran who was leaving for Cape Verde, so we wish them well on their travels. As for us, we are now back in the UK for a weeks Salmon fishing (did I mention Richard is a keen fisherman! lol ) in Scotland, before we head back out to the boat to do the final bits & pieces to Why Not. I believe a second head stay with roller furling and sail has been ordered ( stay sail ) amongst other things! By the time we get back the ARC office should just about be open and running and it will be great to meet up with all the different people and boats that we have been following for the last 6 months, not to mention enjoy all the festivities that goes with the ARC.

Happy sailing
Richard & Tracey on Why Not
