Gozwoz - To Terceira

Yesterday started with a 5.30 call from our Belgian neighbour on Fuga, a short while ahead of our planned alarm call, but helpfully coupled with an offer to untie our long shore stern line. Consequently we were one of the first boats out of Horta. The limited wind was on our nose as we passed down the Sao Jorge Channel but we managed to sail about 20 miles in the afternoon, firstly with cruising chute and then with goose wing (or Butterfly as we have poetically heard it called). On arriving at Angra marina we found a queue of boats waiting to check in at the reception, the planned touch 'n go having failed to materialise. We spent about 45 minutes doing circuits at the marina entrance but felt blessed, particularly as another yacht informed us they had waited 1.5 hours. Our sincere thanks to the crew from Agua Dulce who assisted many yachts at the reception berth prior to the arrival of Lyall and Jake.

Today we had a guided tour of Angra, a very attractive town of real significance in the history of Portugal and now, deservedly, a World Heritage site. Later we are invited to a bull running event, although it is of limited attraction to some.

Roger has been boxing above her weight in recent days. First she told off Our Great Leader for exceeding his daily ration of two Weetabix (by one). Secondly she has complained about the lack of woman overboard equipment on GOZWOZ and that we have not had a woman overboard practice. It has to be said that recovering Roger from a woman overboard situation is likely to present rather fewer problems than recovering, for example, OGL or even the Navigator. I feel that she should consider herself as fortunate in this regard.

There have been some interesting responses to recent blogs. One correspondent commented on the need for governance, presumably in relation to the recent activities of the Bosun. Consideration has been given to appointing the Coxswain as our safety officer, a position for which he appears eminently suited save when practising foreign languages. The real problem, however, appears to lie with the Bosun himself rather than the systems in which he operates. Of considerable interest is the communication frm Mrs Doctor GL to the effect that she will be replacing the skipper as OGL after this trip. I am inclined to believe her.
