Widago - Pre-Game Day 3: Safety Day - Flares & Flags

Whoa…getting closer by the minute to our departure. The remainder of our crew for the Tortola-Bermuda Leg arrived Tuesday. Just a slight delay as the luggage compartment on their flight from San Juan failed to close. Luckily their luggage containing, 30 pounds of gravy mix, did not plummet into the Sir Francis Drake Channel. That would have been most unfortunate.

Wednesday was officially “Safety Day” here in Tortola as we prepare for the Atlantic crossing. ARC Rally Yellow Shirts, Lyle, Jake, & Peter gave explosive presentations on pyrotechnics and life rafts. Obviously, the rally kids were eager volunteers. William & Adelaide experienced first hand the importance of wearing protective gloves and googles while deploying flares. David & Adelaide made it look easy hoisting themselves into the life raft. Even though raft is self-righting, Uncle Guy (Dixon) easily flipped the capsized raft like a born Viking.

The remainder of our day included additional safety briefings aboard WIDAGO: Fire and Man Overboard drills, medical debriefing, “man tours” of engines & electronics. The best part of my day was preparing and raising the code flags to dress the boat. As the remainder of the fleet hoist their own flags, the marina continues to fill with color, energy, and excitement.

Gotta get moving, as today and tomorrow are reserved for pre-cooking meals, last bits of laundry, and final cleaning.
