Nexus - Carnival Batatinha

Once again, the Carnival Batatinha (the Old Town) at the top of the elevator, is a very different experience. This is a town with narrow cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, many shops and a church/cathedral for every day of the year. Carnival is much more family oriented here with small parades of marching Samba bands and costumed performers mixed with street vendors and eclectic individuals of every variety. We've had lunch or dinner on sidewalk cafes with the parades going by in the afternoon and evening. There are many nice restaurants with great food and settings from which to enjoy the spectacle. A very different experience from the "serial rock concert" parades of the large trucks, and although they pass near to the town, fortunately they cannot come down it's narrow streets. Very enjoyable if you take proper precautions and bring NOTHING but some cash split amongst your pockets and stay near the lighted and well policed areas. The military police established checkpoints at the elevator and streets coming into town and were wanding everyone with metal detectors, doing the best they can to keep everyone safe. We never felt threatened as we walked around town, but we kept our hours early and stayed amongst the families in the crowd. We've adopted a routine where we go up to Carnival and have a large but late lunch or early dinner between 2 and 8pm, and we stay for drinks and a bit of walking around before coming back to the boat as the families start to head home, and just skip dinner playing cards and having our own party on the dock. It is a rich and colorful, cultural experience!
