Frisco - Log Day 6 Fun with Electronics

As murphys law will have it, your most valuable piece of equipment will fail when you need it most. Our AIS system which sends messages to ships showing where we are, and presenting a display to us of where the ships are has stopped working. But more importantly each crew member now has a AIS beacon on his life jacket so that we can recover him if he falls overboard. To locate a "Man Overboard" we would use the AIS system to show us where the beacon is, updated regularly.

Preliminary investigation showed a proprietary rubber moulded connector providing power input and NEMA data signals out had degraded or melted near the power input pins. We are in the process of pulling the unit apart in the attempt to supply power by an external pair of wires. There is no sign of any overheated sections on the three circuit boards so we anxiously await reassembly with wires sticking out the back sealed by 5-Minute Epoxy (Has anyone ever had 5-Min epoxy setup in less than an hour ?)

Meanwhile we had a good night sailing in swells of 7 metres diminishing to 4 metres this morning. Paul has just taken two loaves of bread out of the oven which we will enjoy for our lunch.

I will update on the AIS system in tomorrows blog.

Cheers

Fred
