Makena - Nov 14 - watching dolphins fish for flying fish with our nav lights

This morning’s sunset is one of those beautiful wispy delicate paintings changing colors slowly before our eyes. For fun we chatted with 2 boats nearby - Lydia at first and then Alia Vita who hailed us though we could not see each other on AIS. It is nice to exchange fishing stories and other small news. My favorite event since my last log was watching dolphins fish for flying fish in the green light cast by our port side light after dark (when there is no moon). They dart and change direction at such speed it is mesmerizing to watch. A flying fish went right past my foot as I watched but made it back into the ocean with a few wiggles. 3 others were not so lucky as evidenced by their stiff presence on our foredeck this morning. During the day time we are seeing many, many flying fish displays and with our pro photographer aboard we’ve been able to see detailed photographs of how they fly, directing themselves with just the tip of their tail skimming the surface of the water. It is exciting each time a bunch of them decide to make leaps near the boat.

We had the easiest night yet with plenty of rest for the on-call captain and little to do for the crew on their watches. We have a whole lot of sail up and are making good progress towards Cape Verde again.

Just in case those reading these logs are not aware, you can see our position updated every 4 hours on www.worldcruising.com

We just moved our clocks to UTC-1

During my morning watch yesterday, Tuesday 13th, I was breastfeeding Kai alone at the helm when suddenly the gennacker sheet slipped off the winch just as I had been admiring our 9kt SOG. The sheet is more narrow than it should be for our monster electric winches and it was not double locked around the top. After that excitement hopefully we won’t let that happen again.

We have a clothes line out around the table on the so-called cockpit of the boat (below the flybridge with our 2 helms). It makes the boat look very lived-in.

Last night’s prepared dinner was made today’s fare after we caught 2 dorado at the same time. Nom nom. Excellently prepared by PW. We had lots of grilled vegetables to go with it. This kind of meal only makes me think how long the Atlantic crossing will be with respect to vegetables because the carrot preservation tactic was a complete failure, for example! Anyway, there is no fear of us! Over and out until tomorrow when hopefully we will be in Mindelo!

Over and Out.
