American Spirit II - Day 57: Last Provisioning Day & Last Day in Galapagos; Saturday, March 1, 2014

Last day on terra firma before starting the longest leg of the Rally from the Galapagos Islands to Hiva Oa in the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia. The South Pacific.

Picked up the DVD shot by our dive guide from the 2 dives the day before; then shopping for gifts for family back home. Then off to the grocery store buying frozen foods for the freezer: pizza's; BBQ ribs; chicken; and pork chops. Couldn't find any beef I could identify or would want to buy. Then items for the refrigerator: unripe, really small bananas; carrots; cantaloupe; cheese; ham cold cuts; and hot dogs. Plus 2 dozen more eggs, bringing our total eggs on the boat to 12 dozen. (The eggs are stored in the bilge in special plastic egg holding devices). Other items purchased included rolls of paper towels; junk food like oreo cookies and vanilla wafers; potatoes, apples and pears; cereal; and chocolate candy.

What I couldn't find were oranges; small garbage bags; diet coke; ziplock bags; packages of granola bars; and small boxes of raisins.

Once back on the boat the freezer was filled to capacity, a first; the ice trays were emptied into an ice type storage container and the ice trays then refilled. The refrigerator was then emptied, drained and cleaned. By 'drained' I mean the 1 inch of liquid in the bottom of the top loading refrigerator was drained out via a port and pump and then soaked up using a large sponge. Then cleaned with soapy water. Then the refrigerator was filled with beer on the bottom level; diet coke and coke on the 2nd level; and cheese, cold cuts, bananas and carrots on the top l level. That and putting away all the non-perishable items took quite a while.

Then we unloaded the aft, port storage cockpit locker to access the 'hidden' storage area where the freeze dried food is stored and pulled out enough freeze dried to last 3 of us 3 weeks.

At 5:00 PM Joel and Mike headed off to happy hour while I read on the boat. At 7:30 PM I attended a Catholic Church Mass, that was very interesting and very, very, very long. Though I could follow the mass program word for word with the hand out, I didn't really understand any of it. Obviously, it was in Spanish. One family had their daughter baptized. The church is located right on the waterfront across from the public dock.

For dinner we went to the same place we did Friday night. Best restaurant we've found in the islands. Steak, potatoes, carrots and green beans. Quite good.

Back at the boat at 10:00 PM. Lights out at 11:30 PM.
