Trillium - Trillium Has Crossed the Equator!

We celebrated the crossing into the southern hemisphere late this afternoon (Wednesday) with champagne and a photo session. It was great to finally reach the 00.00 reading on the chart plotter! We have had many wonderful days of sailing with steady winds and only motoring a few times when the wind was too low or in the wrong direction. Trillium needs at least 10 kts to start moving and loves to fly at 20-30 kts. The Pacific has been passive so far and provided a great experience for our son, Nick, who is sailing for the first time. Other than sail changes, the crew has not been overworked!

Last night we had another night of shouting in Spanish - somewhat like the night in the Panama Canal. It seems we ventured in the dark into the range of a fishing boat with the 2 mile long lines out. He came directly at us actually herding us out of his territory. He was telling us to go North and East when we wanted to go Southwest! As a result of him bearing down on us while shouting in Spanish, we lost over six hours and went 15 nm out of our way! Since we do not speak Spanish (and even if we did, he was talking so fast repeating himself that we never could have understood), we were working with Nick who has some Spanish and the Spanish for Cruisers book trying to communicate. It was hair raising and frustrating to say the least. So if you look at our track, we look like drunken sailors as we were being chased away. All is well except we are behind where we had expected to be. We will arrive in the Galapagos on Thursday.
