RCWings - RC Wings is Sailing South

RC Wings has arrived in Annapolis. We have travelled all the way from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada--almost 1000 nautical miles just to get to this point.  Now, the fun begins. Our route to get this far was:Go down the St. Clair River, through Lake St. Clair, down the Detroit River, and through Lake Erie to Buffalo.  At Buffalo, we took our mast down, stored it on our boat (yes, we looked like a narwhal) and motored through the Erie Barge Canal to the Hudson River.  We took the Hudson River south to New York Harbor (putting our mast up in Catskills, NY), then go down the coast to the Delaware Bay.  We sailed up the Delaware Bay, through the C&D Canal, and into the Chesapeake Bay.  We have now arrived in Annapolis and plan on going to the Annapolis Boat Show, before. read more...

Paw Paw - Log Day 267: A Taste of Fiji

We knew we would have a busy day today,so after breakfast aboard,we headed ashore to get through all our To Dos: Drop off the dive tank to be serviced and refilled, drop off the sail for repair, find the missing shackle, fill up with dinghy petrol, search forreplacement reefing system boom wheels and the paper chart we need, etc. We managed to get through everything on our list, with the exception of the latter two items, neither of which are critical. Although Roy repaired the existing boom wheels, it would have been nice to replace them with new ones.As for the chart, we have the electronicone, but hopefully we can find someone who has the paper version to peruse. Then it was time to venture off Denarau Island, so we hopped on the local dollar bus and, after taking a tour of the resorts,. read more...

Firefly - Windy days anchored at Cocos Keeling

A couple of weeks back, we made a good decision to leave Krakatoa a day earlier then planned as we arrived at the Direction Island anchorage at Cocos Keeling just before the wind increased significantly. Despite our good timing we did have a very rough 3rd night out of the 4 on the passage with winds gusting over 30 knots and beam seas frequently breaking over Firefly's coachroof. However, no sooner was the anchor set the winds increased and it howled for 48 hours. The wind wss blowing across the anchorage at about 30 knots and when accompanied by a squall it was reaching well over 40 knots. When we first arrived there were about 6 boats riding out the strongs wind, just Firefly and one other from the WARC. The WARC fleet was in fact very spread out due to the tropical low that had. read more...

Paw Paw - Log Day 266: Living on the Leeward Side

Following a great night sleep after calling Ireland last night to wish Elaine's mom a Happy 75th Birthday and hearing that she enjoyed her surprise gift which had just arrived for the start of her day,we were up early again. This time to give Paw Paw some much needed TLC - a detailed cleaning. While Elaine did the inside,Roy did the cockpit area and helm station before diving to do the propellers and part of the hulls. It'staken us all day and we're still not done. However, once we get the dive tank refilled,we'll both get in the water to finish the hulls and then complete the decks. What a job! Of course, Murphy's Law - No sooner had we cleaned everything that our energy levels would allow, when a fire ashore sent soot all over the deck. Grrrrr! Fortunately we managed to get all the hatches. read more...

Paw Paw - Log Day 265: Take Two on Our 33rd Wedding Anniversary Dinner

After satisfying our initial curiosity surrounding Port Denarau Marina yesterday evening, we were up early this morning to head to shore again. This time, in search of the yachting facilities and amenities that we needed: A sailmaker to repair our Chicken Chute,a chandlery to replace the broken shackle off our bauberhauler, a supplier to purchase some much needed cleaning products, specifically for rust and grease removal, somewhere to acquire the missing paper charts we need for New Zealand and, the rarest of products, saildrive oil to do the necessary services, following the extensive motoring we have done of late. After a pleasant breakfast our search commenced.First port of call was the Port Denarau Marina office. It has to be said that this was the most welcoming and helpful marina. read more...

Paw Paw - Log Day 264: Relief, Followed by Astonishment

We arrived at the Navula Passage just before daybreak and after manoeuvring out of the way of a few large cargo vessels, we entered the passage. We had no sooner got Paw Paw lined up with the lights of the range markers and checked our leadline on our navionics charts, when the lghts went out. With the glare of the sunrise directly ahead, coupled with the flat seas, we were unable to see the range markers or any breaking waves that would indicate the reef. Not the kind of excitement we were looking for after a very drawn-out out sail from Savusavu. We did, however, get through safely and opted to anchor in Momi Bay for the night vs heading further up the west coast. It has been a very worrisome few days as we awaited news from Arizona on the well-being of our twin grandsons. With the. read more...

Paw Paw - Log Day 263: The Staging Area

After a good night's rest and a lazy morning, we set sail once again. This time to get through the Beqa Passage by sunset and then onward to reach the Navula Passage by daybreak, following which we will enter the area known as the Nadi Waters and the staging area for many yachts awaiting a weather window to sail to New Zealand. Once settled, we will spend the first few days getting Paw Paw ready for the trek south and then hopefully enjoy some of the touristy things Fiji has to offer while we await a suitable weather window. Today though, we enjoyed a fabulous sail up to the Beqa Passage and couldn't help but notice that Beqa Island from a distance looks just like Camelback Mountain in Phoenix.Tonight we are motoring in light winds and flat seas under a beautiful, moonless starry night,. read more...

Paw Paw - Log Day 262: Dismay - "A Fall from Grace"

We arrived on the outskirts of Suva just after daybreak and found a large number of ships awaiting authorisation to enter the harbour from the Port Authorities. When our turn arrived, we were informed to enter ahead of the ship, Isle De Re. With both engines, fullsteam ahead, we commenced our entry. However, simultaneously,Isle De Re, with the pilot now boarded, had increased her speed as well. With the situation looking very dubious indeed, a second call to Port Authority cleared the miscommunication -We were now to follow the ship in. Either way, that was going to happen regardless or we were going to end up toothpicks. As the saying goes: "Might had right"! When we entered the harbour, the only word to describe our feelings was "dismay" as we tried to find the Royal Suva Yacht Club. read more...

White Satin - Log - Meet the Team

Meet the Team We are three couples, who have played together and sailed together for decades. David Addey (Skipper):  A retired broadcast engineer, David was an ARC participant in 2006 as a paying passenger on ‘Northern Child, a Swan 51.  His ambition then was ‘not to be within sight of land or a fax machine’ on his 50th birthday (10th December).  This year will be the tenth anniversary of that trip so another big birthday is coming up – where will he be for the celebrations this time?  In 2015 David also crewed on ‘Shelena’, an Oyster 545 during the ARC+ for Philip and Helen Scourfield, a trip which proved to be invaluable for gaining useful experience for our voyage this year. Skill which will be useful at sea:  The ability to stay calm in a. read more...
