Dockside activity and seminar programme continues

17 November 2020

Participants woke to beautiful blue skies and it's been a very hot, sunny day here in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - a taste of what's to come on the other side of the Atlantic! The ARC yellowshirt Safety Team were out and about again making first inspections and checks on new arrivals, plus carrying out re-checks on others.

The ARC seminar programme continued online with a live Saint Lucia Preview and presentation, including a Covid19 protocol update and a Q&A session with representatives from the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority and events team, IGY Marina and World Cruising Club. One thing is for certain, everyone arriving will be given a fantastic welcome and their time on the island will be made very memorable. Will Spencer hosted a Q&A on rigging and Stokey Woodall with his unique presentation - 'From satellites to frying pans.'

Sailor Ted was looking for a ride across to Saint Lucia and several children in the ARC have drawn a lovely picture of him having a good time in the Caribbean. They were all great and very colourful, but 9-year old Summer Baylis, who is sailing with her family on board their boat Rush, is the winner. She gets to look after Ted during the crossing and is sure to send us some stories of his trip with them.

Orders for provisions for the crossing from companies such as Ahembo drinks suppliers, JP Rosper Butchers and Ditribuciones Tinamar (fruit and vegetables) are being made and deliveries will take from tomorrow for drinks and later in the week for others items. There's a hustle and bustle around the docks as crews busy themselves, Washing clothes, packing, re-packing, checking the sails and rigging and completing jobs on the boat. Several boats also took the opportunity to go out of the marina for a sail to familiarise the crew with safety drills and get used to the boat, especially if they had new crew joining in Las Palmas. Tomorrow PCR testing for all crew members begins at Vithas Clinic prior to the start on Sunday.
