Salamander - Near Misses

We've been sailing for a few days now and it's extraordinary how dispersed the fleet of 140 boats have become. For the most part we haven't seen any boats at all.

We have, however, had a couple of quite close encounters with craft so far. Given the nature of our sail plan it makes it quite difficult to take avoiding action, particularly if it's a sudden change of direction that's required.

The first was a cargo vessel coming from behind and coming quite close across our bows. By quite close we are talking less than half a mile, which at night is quite close enough thanks!

Next was a strange object with flashing green lights. No one has any idea what this might have been.

Lastly a sailing vessel called Solitude, under motor and making steady progress on a collision course in the depths of the night. Normally a powered vessel would give way to a sailing vessel but there was no sign of life on aboard. My guess is it was a single handed sailor who had fallen asleep and not heard any alarms warning him of impending doom! Luckily we were able to pass behind him comfortably.

All adds to the excitement.
