Sunbeat VI - Day 19 - finished!

We arrived in Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia at 1920 local time. Champagne sailing, rum punch arrival. Met by local ARC crew, rum punches all round and a fruit hamper.A great crossing, albeit somewhat frustrating at times.Special thanks to Andy Pickering for shoreside support - position reporting and weather advice.Congrats to Angela for surviving 3 weeks with five men!!!And well done to Steve - 5 Arcs…!Sunbeat crew - Arc 2022 - signing off. read more...

Sunbeat VI - Day 18 - Nearly there…

The winds eventually filled in nicely from the NNW. Now able to point directly to Saint Lucia. With a distance remaining of around 150nm, should be able to arrive sometime Thursday evening.Weed has been a continual problem. Having to put the engine on and go into reverse every hour of so to clear it off the rudder. At one point we strapped Drac into the bosun’s chair and suspended him from the spare spinnaker halyard over the side of the boat in order to check whether the rudder was clear. Needless to say, crew onboard felt Drac needed to be a little lower over the side in order to see under the boat while it was heeled over, which resulted in an impromptu ducking. With water temperature above 28 degrees C it wasn’t too much of a hardship for him!We ate the last of the frozen meat. read more...

Sunbeat VI - Day 17 - we are on our way - artlast!

.Dolphin Count zero.Fish count zero.Weed count- loads. Not quite going loco down in Acapulco, but as dusk fell Sunbeat finally tacked for St Lucia.Rum punches on horizon?Fingers crossed.Just a small 250 miles to go.Today started with little wind and Nige rudely awoken from his slumber in the bow as Sunbeat crashed down from a large wave.Steve, Angela and Ed (aka Dirty Watch) found this most amusing.Loads of weed today. Is this “a thing”?…. Apparently Steve has never seen so much weed and so few (no)) dolphins.Climate, sea temp or just a phase… who knows. Some maintenance work was undertaken following usual attraction due to long voyage.Main sail slider replaced, outboard on dinghy onto its push pit bracket, inner forestay parked, steering cables tightened.Looking forwards to coming few days. read more...

Sunbeat VI - Day 16 - the sun shines on the righteous

Progress was better today than we had anticipated, since winds were stronger than forecast. This helped to make up for 3 heavy squalls last night, which involved lots of wind from all sorts of directions and lots of rain. The worst thing about these squalls is that, after they have passed, the wind dies completely for 1 - 2 hours before it builds again.Over the last 24 hours, due to the varied conditions, the full wardrobe of 6 sails has been put to good use. Including the code zero, which was used for the first time today, as the wind moved round to the south.Steve has officially hung up his fishing boots, on the basis that sustainable fishing wasn’t very interesting. Having trailed 2 lines for over 2500 miles, we have not caught a single fish. We have, however, caught lots and lots of. read more...

Sunbeat VI - Day 15 - drifting across ithe wide wide sea

Day 506 - Steve tripped over his beard today.Ate Drac.Bit hairy and chewy.Down to last last choc biscuits.Desperation setting in.A quiet and slow night averaging 2-knots.Moments of hope that soon faded with the wind.First flight of the asymmetric before resorting to polled-out jib once more. However a new forecast late in the day - delivered by a little egret looking for a perch - seems more positive.Suffered a blow back on the holding tank.Had a team meeting and immediately elected the admiral ( aka Steve) to deal with it.Setting to work with enthusiasm, Steve quickly suffered from what may be described as a touch of suntan lotion on his left shoulder…. All sorted now - thankfully!Wind has come round to the beam just as little egret predicted.Positive thoughts ahead as we hopefully move. read more...
