Timshel - Tuamotus Too

On Tuesday afternoon we moved to the S end of the Kauehi lagoon, along with Skyelark and Taistealai, well we let Skyelark go first figuring that if she made it OK with her deep keel we would be fine. And so it proved, the electronic charts seemed to be pretty accurate, rocks marked were there in the correct place. We could see the anchor touch down and set itself in sand in wonderful clear water, near little Motus (islands) with Palm tress and shallow passes through the reef, and no-one else around. Exactly what you expect from a wonderful Pacific island.

We had a Sundowner party with a fire on the beach courtesy of Skyelark. The beach was alive with hermit crabs of various sizes, but so far no coconut crabs (apparently they are 2-3 ft across and nocturnal). We all decided to stay another day and spent it snorkelling, walking round our own Pacific motu - interesting to look at the Ocean side, and admiring the many black tipped reef sharks. And we decided to spend yet another day, and Misto arrived.

The weather forecast seemed to be a bit uncertain - apparently the tail end of a tropical depression was going to cause N or NW winds - instead of the usual trades. We set off for Fakarava in company with Taistealai but it was very calm and we had to motorsail. At Fakarava we caught up with Skyelark and Lexington and several other World ARC boats, though it seemed that several of the boats that had been in Fakarava were now setting off for Kauehi and several of those in Kauehi (including us) were arriving in Fakarava.

We rushed to the shop before it closed for Easter weekend and watched people decorating the church. The holding seemed a bit uncertain and it was too deep to snorkel down to the anchor so Bob from Lexington kindly inspected it (and reset it) for us using his new hookah. Hopefully the normal tradewinds will resume soon so that we can sail off to Tahiti.
