Timshel - Panama to Galapagos Day 3 (for us)

Sailed peacefully all night, main plus poled yankee, great stars and moon. Wind died than came up by change of watch so no motoring. When it got light we set the Halfwinder (cruising chute) again with a pole as though it was a (rather small) spinnaker and have sailed steadily like that all day making 4,5 or even 6 knots through the water, more over the ground with the favourable current. Hydra the Hydrovane has been steering, and just a few alarms when it all collapses and threatens to make an hourglass round the forestay. We would be very content apart from being so far behind the rest of the fleet. Judging from last night's SSB sched most of the other boats went charging on through the night making fantastic speeds with their coloured sails set. Not sure if we dare with just 2 on board, but may be necessary to have any chance of getting to Galapagos before it is time to leave again! The sail looks small when hoisted and drawing, but seems huge when you are wrestling with it even when inside the sock. Maybe it is safer to set it without a pole? Otherwise only problem is generator playing up, probably a fault with the oil pressure sender which apparently we do have spare for. But no watermaking and no showers today. GPS says 564 miles to go so plenty of time.
