EH01 - Day 4 &5

Comments from the EH01 Marketing Director

Apologies for not sending a blog yesterday, we were all exhausted.! We have had some mad weather: squalls up to 30 knots which is very hard on the helmsman when there is dark nights (the stars have been intermittent) and no horizon!  We also ripped our main kite and Andras (Skipper) has had us changing jibs and kites, putting reefs in and then shaking them out: at least 4 manuovers per watch, its like a floating boot-camp. ! In saying all of this we are having the time of our life.!

Portion control
Due to uncertain weather systems we are unsure when the boat will reach St. Lucia so the new mantra on board is portion control.
Milk has already been rationed, also now are to only have 2 hot drinks per due to reducing supplies of fresh water (we wash dishes in sea water) and coffee & tea.
We all were happy to do this until we found out that Andras has a hot tub in his saloon and is bathing in copious amounts of fresh water and Pelligrino.!

International language of sailing
Our boat is a truly international one with our Hungarian skipper, UK first & second mate and crew from the US, Romania and Ireland .
The Gaelic lessons started with vigour the other day and the phrase most interested by Starkers (Giles) & Pricey (Rich) was how to order a coffee and get the Wifi password, not sure how this would go down in some Dublin hipster cafe as Irish is pretty much a dead language except for some Gaeltacht areas.

Daily Rations
The food on board has been tasty enough so far; for Breakfast we have a choice of Cereal, Porridge, Muesli & Gill`s granola, for Lunch its wraps and sandwiches and for dinner we have had some fresh meat curries and unfortunately the fresh options have run out and we are now onto the boil in the bag chicken tikka, beef bolognese and chilli con carne. We have now sailed into fishing territory and Doug and Paul are very excited about the possibility of catching  Mahi-Mahi and Tuna. The stand out meals on the trip so far is Cass`s avocado wraps with tomato, onion and peppers and also Peder`s bacon, ham and pepper omelettes.!!

Doug`s catch of the day
Dougie has made his big catch already.! On night-watch one of the crew was sitting at the stern beside the helm helping them by calling wind speed & direction as the visibility was so poor. In re-clipping their harness, their phone must have slipped out of their pocket and slid off the stern. This particular crew member who was not unused to losing phones had given up the ghost to ever seeing Irene the Iphone again. Approximately 12 hours later they were chatting with Doug and he found the Iphone at the cradle at the base of the radar stanchion, basically hanging off the end of the stern in the middle of the Atlantic. amazing!!

AOB
Storme, our Irish crew member wants to give a big shout out to all the RIYC members attending the Big Digger \band tonight, she really hopes they enjoy this ‘up and coming’ band and all beers and Sauvignon Blancs while she relishes her mid-Atlantic feast of boil in the bag Chicken Tikka washed down with Lemon cordial.
