Timshel - Log Day 1

1300 to 1300 142 nm - but not all in the right direction I think. Great excitement at the start, hadn't realized all the horns were for us, and lovely that WCC yellow shirts were on the breakwater waving (thanks Manuel and Chris). Not exactly a racing start but we didn't hit anything and we weren't last, the buzz continued with so many boats together. We hadn't actually helmed so much in ages. Gradually the fleet diverged, those flying kites going more downwind and those like us sticking to white sails only heading off vaguely towards Africa. It got quite exciting overnight, charging down hissing waves in the dark. Still a group of boats around that we could see on AIS and Nav lights - Sea Quark, Ally, Loryma II, Sara Ulrikke, Cookelu meu and NoLimit with Belafonte trucking along in front. By morning the group was reduced, just a few boats visible on AIS, but Steve managed to make contact on the SSB net (its like something out of an old film all hissing and odd noises, but surprisingly clear when someone is transmitting). Sad news that Magda and Tim on the Malo 42 Belafonte have to head back to Las Palmas to get a problem with the rudder stock fixed, they were going so well, I do hope they manage to catch up later. We set up the towed charger and it seemed to be giving good amps, still sailing at a good speed although it had calmed down after the night.
