Small taster of what’s to come!

Monday evening the first ARC Portugal prizegiving took place at Monte Real Club de Yates Baiona. A selection of tapas and wine was served on the lawn just outside the club and participants enjoyed the sunset over the marina. In class B, yacht Sheer Indulgence (Southerly 38) placed first followed by Cadenza (Southerly 42RST) second and Miss Julia (Sweden yachts 340) taking third place. Class A was won by the Beneteau First 45, A’Asiffa, with the Swan 46, Gertha 5, second and the Far 50 PH, Carioca, third.

ARC Portugal is not about racing down the coast of Portugal, it is about having fun and for that reason we also have an ETA competition where the yachts have to guess their time of arrival into Bayona. Yacht Zaurak guessed 50 mins out of their actual arrival time. We also have a smiley miley competition, where the fleet has to guess how far the rally team have driven between ports. Yachts A Capella and Carioca were both 0.6 miles out of the actual distance driven!

A lovely dinner was enjoyed by the participants after the prize giving, which for many kept on going to the early hours of the morning.

Yesterday morning, half of the fleet went on a trip to Santa Tecla in A Guarda. Santa Tecla was a celtic settlement on the top of the mountain next to the river Minho. This river is what divides Spain from Portugal, so the top of the mountain afforded magnificent views of what’s to come - Portugal!

The trip was followed by a walk to the water mills of Muiños do Follon, in O Rosal. A hike up the hill which showed us the essence of Galician nature, with nice waterfalls and their endemic vegetation. The walk finished at a restaurant where participants enjoyed a lovely tapas type lunch of Galician quality gourmet food, and their famous Albariño white wine.

Later in the afternoon the whole fleet joined together at the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona for their skippers briefing, which covered the topic of the coast of Portugal.

Today they have set sail taking the start line at 1045 Spanish time. The first yacht across the line was the Contest 48 CS, Zaurak, followed by Carioca, a Far 50 PH and the Beneteau Oceanis 45, Moondance following closely behind. This legs marks the start of their sail down the coast of Portugal heading to Povoa do Varzim where the rally team will be ready to meet them later in the afternoon.
