Lexington - Guest Post by Terry Clark

It is currently 2 a.m. EDT in Silver Spring, Md. Such an introduction by Bob usually indicates he’s bored to death on a slow night watch. Me, I’ve just got mundane, civilized jet lag — which brings to mind the only real advice I can give to anyone sailing the South Pacific Islands. Invest as much time as you possibly can. As some of the ARC boats have found, with several choosing to linger a year and rejoin in 2018; you can spend weeks in any group of islands and still find new delights in the next island. My nephew, Ben and I only gave ourselves a couple of days either side of our passage dates between Fiji and Vanuatu. As far as I’m concerned, at least two more weeks would give you a chance to enjoy the islands the ARC isn’t visiting. We met great people in the ARC and learned more sailing in 5 days of ocean passages than in a dozen coastal cruises. Bob, Sam and Karen put us to work and school. Seeing other boat’s advantages and weaknesses as we made way in challenging conditions was a unique opportunity. Still, as everyone has written before me, it’s the people in the ARC and the islands that will linger most in your memories. Although the lava bombs at sunset in Tanna’s Yasur volcano will be hard to forget. Terry Clark.
