Timshel - Panama and the Canal and Las Perlas

Have not updated this blog for a while so this is just to fill in stuff we did when close to land. We had a very interesting time on the Caribbean side of Panama, visiting Portobelo (sacked by British pirate Henry Morgan), then sailing through the breakwaters of the canal area to Shelter Bay. Lots of boat work there, but we had a great trip to the Embera Indian village - everyone came back with painted on tattoos - they did wash off eventually. The canal trip was very smooth, our advisor was very good and we were rafted with Laura Dawn and Tulla Mor for the trip. We were very grateful to Helen from Laura Dawn who came aboard to be one of our line handlers. And then we are in the Pacific and motoring under the Bridge of the Americas! Panama city was very interesting. Lots of shopping and more boat work including getting the first 50 hour service for the new engine by the Volvo engineers - arranged with lots of help from Stefano. It was nice to get out of the marina though and head out to Las Perlas, and we saw a whale on the way. A relaxing few days in the islands then to Contadora for the Skippers briefing and barbecue party. Also a final check of the hull for the Galapagos. Everyone was very grateful to yellow shirt Mark for snorkelling around all the boats (maybe he just wanted to ask everyone "Can I check your bottom") and we found some obvious barnacles that the divers at La Playita had missed. We are very grateful to our faithful team of yellow shirts, Cecila, Stefano, Mark and Felix, for all their help and efficient organisation and unfailing cheerfulness, we really appreciate it.
