Exocet Strike - January 11-12th 2017

We left Cape Town at 0745 yesterday weds 11th, nice sunny morning. We expected a NW wind and we weren't disappointed. Bit of a pain motoring waiting for the wind to fill in. Quite chilly as well, quite a bit of fog. The current here comes up from the Antarctic, so it's only 14 deg C, interacts with the warm moist air coming off the land.
Anyway by 1800 the wind had settled into the SW and we were reaching quickly. Put in a reef at 2100 and kept it in until 0600 this morning, a great first nights sail, but light around 0200, but it's 12-14 knots now, cloud is slowly dispersing and the sea temp is up to 21 deg C. We had current with us most of the night now it's across us, pushing us east to west, which although we are well west of our route it's ok since we want to be keeping well off the coast to avoid the interaction between the thermal low on southern Africa and the high pressure in the southern Atlantic, can easily give up to gale force winds.
That's it for now folks, I will try to remember to write each day. Oh forgot we saw dolphins as we left in the fog, quite surreal to see them jumping out of the water in very reduced visibility.
Regards
John
