Exody - Day 36 - Doldrums !

As forecast we have now run out of wind but we carried it further than some of the fleet by keeping east thus we are nearly a day later than some in starting our engine - until we get at least 10 knots of wind from any direction. At 11.00 today, Sunday 15th, 48 hours after the start we had covered 332 miles, about a third of the distance - which with the recommended routing is at least 50 miles more than the rhumb line 850 miles. We altered course slightly this morning to the west rounding the remote Isla de Malpelo as a waypoint. Next target is crossing the equator Tuesday sometime - we need to plan appropriate celebrations and creative dressing up for this momentous midocean event - Petter is already fingered as a dead-ringer for Neptune !

As the wind dropped toward lunchtime we flew the loose luffed foresail to try and maintain 4 knots - but with only 5 knots of breeze, this was not enough so the engine went on at 13.00.

Now we have given the crew the standard 48 hours to get their sealegs, a 'mother' rota has been established and today we have also set the fishing line anticipating the end of the fresh protein in our small fridge. So far our main meals have been Beef Bourginon by Marian and Chinese Lemon Chicken by James. I have been left to be creative tonight with the deeply unpopular ribs that someone bought and which need to be used and chicken wings bought by mistake! Perhaps I'll be saved by a fresh fish!
