Thank You Cape Town!

Under blue skies and the magnificent Table Mountain in the background, the World ARC 2024-25 fleet gathered in Table Bay for the start of Leg 15, South Africa to Brazil, via Namibia.

With light wind speeds of around 10kts the fleet were able to sail over the line and out into the Atlantic where the winds increased to 15kts providing spectacular sailing conditions northwards.

It was an exciting start with Sea Monster taking their time to master the preferred end of the line, which paid off as they took start line honours. Choosing the ODM end of the line, they were quicky followed by Bahati and then Seaside who crossed nearer to the committee vessel.

The route from Cape Town to Walvis Bay will cover 710 NM and with strong trade winds forecasted the first boats are expected to make landfall as early as Tuesday.

Participants have loved their time in South Africa and especially during their stay in Cape Town. With so much to offer in all respect, crews have been able to add to their already incredible journey around the World.

Following the passage from Richards Bay to Cape Town, the fleet arrived at the V&A Waterfront Marina. It is thanks to Marina Manager, Joshio Fisher and Louis Souls who welcomed the fleet and provide expert knowledge of the arrival procedures and advice on the local area.

With time on their side, some of the crews flew home to family and friends for the holiday period. With the International Airport only being a 20-minute drive away, Cape town provides a good hub for travelling to far off destinations.

For those who chose to stay and explore, there have been stays in the winelands, safari tours, drives along the coasts and energetic hikes up Table Mountain, which all provide breathtaking views. Additionally, there have been many parties and pontoon gatherings to include delicious wine tastings.

With the Marina being part of the V&A complex there has been a lot to see and do right on the fleet’s doorstep. The V&A Waterfront is an iconic mixed-use destination located in the oldest working harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. The V&A is a symbol of heritage and diversity, where people from all walks of life can play, live, shop, dine and work while immersed in the vibrant spirit and authentic local culture.

The fleet have been busy over the last few days with last minute preparations and provisioning before their onward departure to Namibia and Atlantic crossing. Taking a little time out the fleet enjoyed Farewell Drinks at the Royal Cape Yacht Club on Thursday evening. Located in the Chart Room overlooking the Club’s Marina it was a fitting end to a fantastic stopover in Cape Town.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club continue to support the World ARC rally, and it is with thanks to General Manager, Toni Mainprize and her team who have added to the fleets experience. The Club is not only a place to enjoy delicious food and drinks in a relaxed environment, but they also provided the rally with administration support for clearing out of South Africa. It is with special thanks to Club Secretary, Andrea Peral, for enabling crews to experience a smooth exit from the country. Additionally, we wish to thank Robyn and Terrance for managing the start line vessel which always provides a fun experience for all involved.

On asking Eimer on Navillus 3 what few words sum up her stay in Cape Town she instantly replied, “I’ll be back!”. This destination certainly stands out for many in the already long list of magical experiences gained over the last 12-months.
