NoStress - Log Day 1 - Leaving Gran Canaria

As predicted there were light airs for the start and, as it’s a cruising rally, crossing the line at one o’clock was a leisurely affair when compared to the cut and thrust of the start lines we’re used to.

We were one of a few boats that decided to head offshore to see if there was more wind but there was little to be found early in the afternoon, so other jobs could get done and a late lunch of our last shop-bought bread for sandwiches was served.

The cruising chute made its first ever flight and, with a few tweaks to the rigging, was giving us some lovely pace - seeing us pass other boats in the fleet. A minor failure (a strop on one of the blocks snapped) happened as the wind suddenly scurruied from 10 to 16 knots, so the bright red canvas ended its debut and it was back to white sails.

There’s mixed emotions on board at the moment. People have spent over 18 months preparing for this and now we’re on our way. There’s tiredness from the last few days of fevered preparations, and a sense of cautious optimism as we know we can enjoy it but are all respectful of the elements and hoping for a smooth crossing.

We’ve had our first evening meal at sea, a delicious chilli reminded us that yesterday’s toils definitely weren’t in vain. Now the crew’s focus is onto settling into our shift pattern which we’ll be using to see us through the rest of our voyage.

Attached is a shot of the view from our dinner table.

Best wishes,

Alex & the NoStress crew
