Lexington - Lizard Island 8/18/17

We sailed thru the night to arrive at Lizard Island at about 08:00. This is a very nice place in the outer Barrier Reef. We had a moderate wind that let us average 6 knots or a little under for most of the night. Early in the day it was very light and we motored. I am sitting in the cockpit writing this as a small 6-12 passenger prop plane lands. It is amazing what is done in the name of pleasure. There is a nice resort here and I guess people fly in for their stay. Another plane just landed. The tourist trade in the area is impressive. It is hard for me to judge because I just get a glimpse of what is going on and I am of course seeing the tourist stuff because I am a tourist. This has to lead to one of my favorite stories of residency training. I was seeing a patient with a very small, early cancer of the voice box that had about a 98% chance of cure. He was refusing treatment. I was literally mad at him and trying to explain why he was making a foolish decision. He immediately realized his error as he spoke these words “Young man, I have been an undertaker for 50 years and I have never seen anyone live from cancer.” He had his surgery and did well. We all have to realize that there is no way we can experience enough to make good decisions about things outside our realm of experience. I hope everyone is doing well. I appreciate any comments and I have had some good ones. A friend from high school has written an article about our adventure for his local newspaper. It is amazing what social media does connecting people and reuniting people. Now if I could just get everyone to think like me!!! May fair winds fill your sails with reunited friendships!  Photo is Lizard Island Bob
