Ximera - Day eleven - Fishermans tales

14∞09.29 N - 29∞41.23 W --> 14∞08.48 N - 32∞04.48 W

What happened to 'Day Eleven' I hear you cry.

To be honest we had great plans to write an epic poem that would go down in history and maybe one day appear in text books for children to study. The problem with that is that great poems are not written in a day and we have been slow coming up with rhymes for 'Mahi Mahi'!

So read on and you'll find something very exciting at the end! ...

The fridge has been a problem since yesterday and we are out of metaphors for the butter melting, along with other goods that we're eating fast.

The great news of today is that we have caught a mahi-mahi and a tuna! Our fishermen (Simon 'New Rod', Piers '50p Charity Shop Rod' and Will (Hand-made Handline) got the fishes that they have been searching for over the last 10 days!

Here is the history of the big and strange (as in all the fisherman's tales) catch. Simon, the writer, has finished his cigarettes today, so dont' pay attention if he's a little bit strange. Breaking from high level of nicotine addiction can wake up the poet hidden inside anyone...

When a man grows old
And his rod goes cold
And the tip of his lure turns blue
Looking back on a life
Of trouble and strife
He can tell you a tale or two.

So, I'll park my arse
And fill my glass
And to you a tale I'll tell
Of Ximera the boat,
Which is still afloat,
And the fishes we caught in a swell

The wager was clear
With Aldourie for beer.
Free ale for the crew caught the most.
No picture, no pay
Or the ones got away
We shook hands and we drank them a toast.

Cap Will was on watch
Scratching his crotch
The others were scratching their heads
Three lines had been set
For fishes to net
To make sure the crew would be fed.

The handline went snap!
And the new rod lost slack
And the charity rod started to reel
The child got line three
Which still remained free
But suddenly that wasnt the deal.

Bright summersaulting fish
To land them, our wish
But line three just wasnt to be.
Our dreams weren't all dashed
As one fish still thrashed
And our quarry we would all soon see.

So that's how far we have got. We have landed eight fish so far and put one baby mahi mahi back. But when you read the following notes the bizarre story unfolds.

*************************
"three lines out, homemade hand line which sounded the alarm, 50 year old charity store two piece and a new rig as recommended by Captain Canary Las Palmas Arc marina

Washing up gloves with hooks got lost

Japanese factory made lure worked. then hand line snapped. next something large on the new rod. very large, stated reel in, the 2 piece got a mahimahi, 3 ft long jumping on it. Mahi Mahi jumped clean out, waved goodbye as it spat the hook. It went deep and we passed rod between Simon, Piers (child), Will and Giamoco

The reel had to be watered to stop it heating up when the fish ran
The rod was almost bent at 90 degrees and reeling in was hard work
Around the boat you could see huge Mahi Mahi, a five-foot sailfish which was on the hook, sharks and tuna

When the sailfish was 10 feet from the boat it suddenly swam under the stern, the line went slack and it had spat the hook, then, very bizarrely, the line went taught again but with less ferocity, and a minute later we landed a 3 kilo atlantic bluefin tuna!.

We are now looking for Unicorns and mermaids. well at least the boat all knows what the Fox says from the song "What does the fox say?" by Ylvis which was playing at the time

We have now run out of rhyming inspiration so have decided to Crowd Source the final two or three verses! And as a competition!

Can you finish it off? Or maybe write the next verse? A bucket (or few) of beers at sundowners in Rodney Bay for the best. If you are entering the competition but are not based in Rodney Bay we will have to drink them for you but will obviously toast your literary talent and give you an honourable mention in the final dispatches of this blog.

Please send your entries to:

[email protected]
The crew's decision is final and if you don't agree just come to the bar for a beer anyway!
Th rhyming is based on 12 line stanzas of A,A,B,C,C,B D,D,E,F,F,E
Please try and keep them clean enough to publish.
