Widago - Pre-Game Day 1: Mighty Preparations

I can tell we are getting close to departure: there is an increased energy to everything. The fact that we were up, showered and caffeinated by seven, while not uncommon for most, was way out of character for us. The volume and rough-housing coming from the port side hull continues to increase exponentially as we approach Saturday’s departure. To say that the boys are excited would be an understatement.

In preparation for our safety inspection this morning, Skipper reviewed all manner of safety procedures: fire, flooding, rigging failure, tethering, and my personal favorite - Man Overboard. MOB discussions are really great if you've been sleeping too much and need something to keep you awake lying in pool of sweaty twisted sheets from 1-4am.  Needless to say, Yellow Shirt Lyall of ARC Europe was really helpful during our safety checkout, making only a few minor suggestions. Given that our trip down from Florida in February was, “quite spirited”, WIDAGO was put through her share of challenging seas and conditions. This gave us a chance to make useful modifications to securing our anchor (like actually securing it) and dinghy, as well as replacing almost all of our running rigging. The folks at Nanny Cay Marina have been great.

It’s been great watching all the boats arriving. Brandon, DockMaster Extraordinaire, put us in prime position for beach/bar access and exposure to watch all the vessels in the marina. More and more ARC flags are hoisted by the hour. We are really looking forward to meeting more of the fleet, as well as re-connect with crews we have already met this season.
