Aviva - Fish story

As you might infer from our earlier blog post containing haiku, we caught a mahi on Nov 12. What a beautiful fish! It measured 27 inches. It was hard to do it, but we are fish-eaters, so we processed and had a fish dinner, with two more dinners in the freezer. Gratitude to mahi!

Last night we had our second "fish event." I (Dorothy) was on the 1-4 am watch, sitting in the cockpit, motoring due south at 6 knots in 5 knots of E wind, having my mid-watch biscotti (we have our deprivations at sea, but we also have our simple pleasures!), when suddenly I was hit on the left arm by ... something wet. Quickly but carefully stowing my partially-eaten biscotti for later consumption, I investigated the cockpit floor. It seems we had a hitch-hiker -- a flyingfish! This is where I am supposed to say it was 8 FEET LONG! But really it was about 8 INCHES long, silvery (not banded). Flying fish do occasionally land on the boat at night, only to be discovered as stiff corpses the next morning. However, this fish story had a happy ending for all, including the fish. Tagging me as it flew aboard saved its life. I scooted our gasping visitor aft, under the helm seat and out the transom, where I imagine it swimming off, albeit a bit dazed and confused about what on earth just happened. I washed up and returned to my biscotti, delighted to have a fish story to share in the morning.
