Longbow of Argyll - Baltic Rally 5: the Gotland interlude

After a few hours sleep, we met up with a new crew member: Felix (Clare's husband), and waved a refreshed-looking Peter and Francoise off at the ferry. It was then time to go back to sleep for a few more hours before setting off to explore Visby. (For the benefit of non-sailing readers I would just like to point out that although it may seem as if there is rather a lot of sleep mentioned, it is one of life's luxuries while on passage, so we sleep all we can when we arrive!).

Visby is an old medieval trading town, with the 3 km surrounding wall and ramparts still mostly intact. There are lots of old ruined churches, narrow cobbled streets and gardens to explore. Outside the walls the modern town of Visby has all the amenities one would expect from the capital of ~120km- long island, with the modern architecture to match.

Longbow's crew spent a lovely couple of days poking around the island: Clare and Felix hired a car and went off to explore the nature reserves and rock formations (rauks) whilst the rest of the crew went on a guided tour of the ramparts and the Old Town. In the late afternoon Clare, Felix and Jane headed off to a headland in the north of the island which hosted Gotland's tallest rauk. We had a lovely wander through the pine forrest, and enjoyed a picnic dinner in Likkehamn harbour while watching the world go by.
