Luna Quest - Monday, 20th July, 2015

Noon Position: 18.56S 157.59E

Daily run: 183 logged miles

The sky refuses to show any blue. It has been overcast since we left Vanuatu. The rain has stopped for the moment, but more is forecast with the advent of a new area of low pressure heading our way. It will bring gale force winds as well. The lead boats are several days ahead of us and the rear of the fleet is made up of the usual suspects. The night has been rough with several thumpings and some of the wave tops visiting the cockpit. The weather around the east side of Australia does not appear appealing. Queensland, one of the northern territories has just reported the thickest snowfall in 30 years. Climate change seems to be a reality after all…

There are about 540 miles left to sail to Mackay, which includes a 130 odd miles of the Hydrographer’s Passage through the Great Barrier Reef. There are likely to be cargo vessels to and from Australia, which will all make for a challenging sail in the passage. Hopefully, the new area of low pressure will not bring southerly gales as a large stretch of the Hydrographer’s Passage runs south, the very direction we need to go to get us through.

Eric
