Niue Welcome the World ARC

After a beautiful stay on the idyllic island of Suwarrow the World ARC fleet headed south west to visit Niue which is one of the smallest island nations and one of the largest raised coral atolls on earth.

The Niue Yacht Club and Niueans are big supporter of the World ARC and await the fleet’s arrival each year with great enthusiasm. Very recently the Yacht Club has a new home. With the support of the local community and amazing volunteers they have an ideal venue located in the heart of the main town of Alofi.

It was at this venue where group 2 of the World ARC Fleet were made to feel very welcome by Keith and Brian, the headquarters manager, who form part of the very passionate Niue Yacht Club (NYC) team. An evening of welcome drinks and nibbles was provided. The drinks were kindly sponsored by the Bond Store who are government owned so the fleet were hugely appreciative of their support in helping to provide another memorable gathering. Keith was presented with a signed poster and flag from all the fleet to add to his growing collection of World ARC memorabilia.

Earlier on in the week group 1 of the fleet were treated to a very enjoyable evening with drinks and finger food hosted at the Tourist Office. Located in their Visitors Information Centre the evening was a great success and provided the fleet with the opportunity to learn more about the island and the strong community within.

As part of the World ARC programme both groups also enjoyed organised dinners at the Scenic Matavai and Falala Fa restaurant and everyone took the opportunity to take tours of the island visiting the unique coral landscapes and caves. The more adventurist members of the fleet braved the deep blue coral waters and had some of the best dives they have ever experienced.

During the stay it was apparent that the local school welcomes support from outside sources. Marie Harvey on Cassiopee W is a school teacher and was delighted to head up fundraising efforts from the fleet both with cash and items which could be used by the school. The total cash raised was 800 NZ$ and many items were donated to include, pens, books, musical instruments and basics such as cleaning products.

The fleet and World Cruising thank the island and community of just 1,000 people for the big welcome and for sharing your beautiful atoll.

Group 2 are preparing to slip lines in the next couple of days and will catch up with the first half of the fleet in Tonga.
