Blue Pearl - UA-PUO

It's pronounced Wapoo but spelled Ua-Pou, the Polynesian names are a bit
of a challenge but charming. Ua-Pou , a small island, is quite a sight.
I can't help but compare its "skyline" to the pen drawings you might see
in the Dracula type fairy tales. Tall Obelisk type rocks, jagged top of
mountain lines, steep rock walls meeting the ocean surf, all a quite
beautiful and somewhat unnerving sight.

We spent time in two bays here. Baie de Vaiehue and Baie D'Hakahetau
where we are now. Yesterday morning in Vaiehue we witnessed a dolphin
early morning spectacle. Huge numbers of dolphins celebrating day break.
We assume it is a daily ritual. It lasts for about an hour and then all
goes quiet. They are all over the place and miscellaneous other fish are
participating by also jumping out of the water, maybe they are scared.
In any case a unique experience for us. Colin tried to capture some of
the action on his underwater video camera with little success.

We swam in the bay, snorkeled and just relaxed. Jack and Colin were busy
all day exploring rock walls, trying to climb them and taking pictures
and shooting video. Those guys have a lot of energy.

Late afternoon we moved on to Baie D'Hakatau, equally impressive and
this time with a little village ashore. We haven't been ashore but of
course Jack and Colin have. In fact they are there right now because
they heard yesterday that a German gentleman who lives half way up the
mountain makes chocolate at home so they are on a chocolate hunt. Of
course, I am keen to have them come back with some of that stuff..!

The last several days, first on the island of Tanuata and now on Ua-Poa
have been a wonderful experience. The type of thing we were hoping for
by undertaking all of this in the first place. Later this morning we are
leaving for Nuku-Hiva where we will meet up again with the fleet for
various activities and to provision and get the boat ready for the nexr
stage of the trip. We will then be on our way to Tahiti via the
Tuamoto's a chain of atoll islands. We will write again before we leave
Nuku -Hiva.

Captain Ruud.
