La Cigale - Day 3 - 21 November - On loaves and fishes

It's 5pm. I have to begin today's post with the catch of the day: a stunningly beautiful five kilos of blue and yellow iridescence, though none of us are quite sure what it is as we can't find Harley's crib sheet! [Breaking news: thanks to Xavier having downloaded the entire Wikipedia, we have just figured out it is a Mahi-Mahi]. Harley and Xavier had put lines out at lunch, and four hours later there was a tug on the line. Watching Harley reel it in was quite something else. "Epic!" said Isabelle. "OMG!" said Catherine, and then "What does that mean again Mum?!" and then in a matter-o-fact voice observed "it looks just like a mermaid. Let's give it to the supermarket." Hearing the tail thump on the floor as the fish died Francis declared "I get vegetarians now. I won't be eating fish tonight." I know what he means. Like the fish, deep down we are all a bit gutted. Still, we did apologise to the fish and gave thanks to the ocean for our supper.

It really has been a day of firsts. First cup of tea this morning, first post written, first day of sea legs all round...

And then Xavier baked our first loaf of bread for lunch, which really was manna from heaven! Harley heated up ready-made spinach tortilla, while I made a simple guacamole, ripe with avocado, red onion, garlic, coriander and a twist of lime. Bizarrely the limes are yellow and the lemons are green. Go figure!

Speaking of fruit, our bananas are turning, so we used up three in the dairy & egg free banana bread recipe RAFTKIN shared with us. We adapted the recipe to factor in the red apples that we have to use up. Clare did advise us in the provisioning class that green apples lasted longer, but like a fool I got carried away speaking Spanish at the market and between the vendor, and the kids, was persuaded otherwise!

On a roll (!), we then made a batch of flapjacks with the other three bananas and then devoured the whole lot at four o' clock tea. So much for the 24 hour detox yesterday! Still, we used up the energy afterwards flexing all our biceps reeling in the supper, eh?!

EGG & DAIRY FREE APPLE & BANANA CAKE

(Adapted thanks to RAFTKIN recipe via their friends the Diaz family)

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp baking powder
1 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp nutellex (not Nutella! We used margarine)
1 1/2 tbsp veg oil
1 1/2 tbsp water
3 mashed bananas
2 tbsp rice milk (we used almond)
2 red apples
Ground ginger, cinnamon & brown sugar sprinkled in bottom of tin

Method:
1. Cream marg with sugar
2. Add oil, water and banana & combine
3. Add dry ingredients (we forgot the baking powder and it turned out fine)
4. Add rice/almond milk and combine
5. Grease and line loaf tin, sprinkling ginger, cinnamon & sugar in bottom, then layer of grated apple.
6. Pour mixture on top
7. Bake in boat oven as long as it takes! Our oven thermometer said 180 degrees and it took about 45 min, but we did add in Helen's flapjacks to cook too for last 15 min...
8. HELEN'S FLAPJACKS:
9. 3 mashed bananas, dollop of melted marg, ginger, cinnamon, three mashed bananas, handful of ground almonds and oats. Combine the lot and cook til ready!
