Hummingbird - Blog - mmm, bacon

Mmmmm, bacon. I’m up a tad early for my watch this morning as I defy anyone to sleep through the smell of frying bacon. Accompanied by a glorious orange-red sun rising astern and a fresh breeze it’s just what we needed after the sad news we heard last night.

Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the person lost in the Southern Ocean on the Clipper Race, as well as the crew and especially the skipper. It is a stark reminder to us of how mighty the ocean is and just how small we are. But we have a great team on board the good ship Hummingbird and we’re taking good care of ourselves and each other; ensuring we are all wearing our lifejackets, are clipped on, have topped up our sunscreen and are drinking lots of water.

It is no mean feat to bring together 12 random people on a 60-foot space and have them all working as a well-oiled machine within a few days; huge shout out to Rachael and Holly for their professionalism, their knowledge and for providing a great environment for learning and practising whilst having fun. Yesterday I realised how lucky I am to be a part of it, which motivated me to write a short poem about our last 24 hours:

Once we are all out at sea
Whatever will be it will be
In the middle of the night
When we wrap the kite
Together we’ll fix it you’ll see

We patch and we stitch in the aisles
While under main we sail a few miles
A hoist and a drop
Stitch and patch, we don’t stop
Hoist once more to a yacht full of smiles

Speeding on at full pace under kite
We reflect on an eventful night
In the light of the morn
As we all stretch and yawn
The competition yachts come back into sight

What a brilliant team we all are
Together we’re going to go far
Let’s keep up the pace
And go win the race
Then I’ll buy us a drink in the bar

From all of us to all of you, fair winds,
Nicky
