Misto - Days 84-87: Nuku Hiva

Friday March 31 was Carl's last day aboard Misto as he was staying at the Moana Nui Pension ashore for the last night. We had all planned to take a tour and hike to the Hakaui Waterfall and Valley but unfortunately Ros had picked up a gastro bug and was not well enough to go.

Howard and Carl embarked on what was a beautiful but strenuous hike as much of the walk was on boulders, with a wonderful guide who shared his deep knowledge and love of the area. That evening we said goodbye to Carl. It had been great to have him aboard for the Pacific crossing and we were really pleased that he was able to enjoy the striking beauty of the Marquesas with us. Many thanks Carl, and also a big thank you for the beautiful parero that you kindly gave Ros - she will really enjoy wearing it.

Saturday was spent quietly, doing provisioning in the morning and then having Steve and Anita from Timshel over for dinner aboard Misto in the evening.

Sunday was an opportunity to attend Mass at the Cathedral Notre-Dame of the Marquesas Islands. The cathedral is built from stones from the 6 inhabited Marquesas islands. Inside, the pulpit, font and stations of the cross as well as other pieces of furniture, are all intricately wood carved and attest to the skill of the Marquesan artisans. The service was conducted alternately in French and Polynesian, however the priest was so softly spoken that he was difficult to hear even over the PA system. Afterwards we met him and it turned out that he was Belgian. The singing was deeply moving and the whole service had a welcoming atmosphere.

Having stayed in Nuku Hiva slightly longer than expected, for various reasons including a good weather window to get to the Tuomotos, we decided to do a tour of the island on Monday which we arranged through Kevin at Yacht Services. Jocelyne of Henua Enana Tours is a French lady married to a Polynesian who has been on Niku Hiva for many years. She was very knowledgeable and we experienced the rugged island scenery, powerful archeological sites and lunch at Chez Yvonne - Restaurant Hinakonui in Hatiheu.

We decided to depart on Monday evening and after visiting the bank ashore we secured everything aboard for the passage to the Tuomotos and departed, shortly behind Aurora, North and Scallywag.
