Paw Paw - Log Day 292: The Beauty of Nature

While this passage has been particularly challenging due to the enormous fluxuation in the condtions, compounded by a passage plan based on ill advice, resulting in us having to make a major course correction yesterday morning in order to regain our easterly component, which has basically cost us at least 100NM and precious time, we have been in awe of the beauty of nature which we have had the good fortune of experiencing.

Elaine enjoyed the most spectacular sunrise this morning as both the moon and the sun rose in the east within a few hours of each other. While a crescent moon hung over the horizon, daybreak turned the sky to vivid shades of yellow, orange, pink, purple and blue, streaked by mauve and charcoal coloured cumulus, altocumulus and cirrus clouds, before the sun rose like a huge fireball of burnt orange, accompanied by the most incredible "green flash" , all of which reflected off the calm surface of the ocean. It was simply breathtaking!

The pitch black, clear moonless nights have revealed stars that are so bright and start immediately above the horizon, dubbing us into believing they are lights from other vessels on the horizon. In fact, we've even gone as far as pull out the binoculars to investigate. Couple that with the sparkles from the bioluminescence as Paw Paw makes her way through the water and we're surrounded in a bubble of brilliance the entire night.

Late this afternoon we experienced a few isolated showers, but the defined colours of the rainbow that accompanied them looked like it had been painted in the sky.

We believe that the privilege of witnessing this kind of uninterrupted natural beauty is the essence of what keeps every sailor, including ourselves, chasing the horizons, regardless of how many unpleasant days we encounter at sea.
