Paw Paw - Log Day 229: Plenty of New Firsts on Paw Paw

We agree on something which, in itself, is a momentus occasion. We agree that this passage will go down as the worst passage we have ever had to undertake on Paw Paw.

While we knew it would be difficult based on the fact that we had to turn around the last time we tried it, on hindsight, we should have just soldiered on because we have spent the last 24 hours, with Bay Dreamer (Anna and Daniel) for company on the high seas, bouncing around and slamming into waves anyway.

Thankfully, the wind direction and swell held, which on paper makes this look like the perfect sail. We haven't deviated from our rhumb line by more than 0.5NM at any time. Unfortunately, the choice to deviate in order for a more comfortable ride was unavailable, as there are numerous shallow area that one has to navigate between.

So, with plenty of new firsts on Paw Paw ie having to put a 3rd reef in the mainsai due to the very high winds not forecasted, seas spraying over the bow, up the coach roof, up the sides, over the stern and Roy feeling "green" for the first time ever, even including all his expeditions in the Southern Oceans to Gough Island, Tristan da Cuna and Montevideo, we are delighted to report that, with less than 20NM to go and "land ahoy", all is well on board and we are both very grateful that we have managed to keep all our meals down!

We are also looking forward to catching up with our friends, particularly on Nina and Cattiva, here in Vava'u. Unfortunately we've missed Do Over by just a few days as they had to head for Fiji due to their 30 day visa expiring.
